Gas Safety Week runs from 18-24 September. The aim is to raise awareness of the very real dangers caused by poorly maintained or faulty gas appliances.

Around 50 people die annually due to carbon monoxide poisoning and thousands more are seen in hospital each year.

A family in Manchester was so severely affected by the gas that they have sustained long term injuries from continued exposure to the invisible gas, including brain injury, problems with eyesight and hearing.

After constant visits to the GP over a 3 year period it was only when their gas boiler was serviced that it was discovered the CO (carbon monoxide) was escaping into the house due to the flue being incorrectly fitted.

Fortunately the family survived to tell the tale but are living with long term damage caused by the gas.

Arranging for your Gas Boiler to be checked annually is easily arranged with your local Gas Safe registered Plumber in Chelsea and Fulham.

Top UK Worker is won by a Plumber

The UK Worker of the Year annual event was held in Brands Hatch and won by 34 year old Chris Teale who was recognised for his outstanding work. Chris had to appear before a final panel of judges who deliberated on the result over 7 worthy candidates, with Chris finally winning out.

The prize, was a brand new Suzuki car and Chris was enthusiastic when he said, "I'm totally thrilled to win the 2014 UK Worker of the Year award. Even now it still doesn't feel like it's really happening to me. It's been a great competition so many thanks to Suzuki and Dickies. When I entered the contest I never imagined reaching the final, let alone winning it. The moment they mentioned I had won I felt totally overwhelmed ".

Chris has been developing HITGAS, his plumbing and heating business for over two years and has a client base of over 1,000, his impressive portfolio was one of the deciding factors which lead to his triumph in the competition.

"Plumbing Edge" Provides Knowledge on Changes

The Plumbing Edge is a free evening seminar organised by APHC and Baxi. Specially cantering to heating and plumbing businesses, the event was held in APHC's own offices in Solihull, West Midlands during 16th October 2014. This was a worthwhile event for many professional plumbers in London and even across the UK.

The Plumbing Edge provided those attending with insider's knowledge on the advantages of trade membership. In addition there were many invaluable presentations relating to changes to the Energy-related products Directive. Baxi's chief of product management, Jon Philips, led the presentation explaining the Directive. The primary issue to be addressed was new eco-designs and the energy labelling of such products. New legislations which are to come into play were analysed and the effect on the industry assessed."This updated legislation will be brought into effect from 2015. Specifically, heating or hot water products with less than 400kW of power output will be directly affected by this directive."

Philips continued, "This legislation will allow the EU to reach their 20-20-20 target. This includes a 20% reduction in emissions, whilst simultaneously increasing their portion of renewable energy before the year 2020. All heating systems and boilers are going to be identified using a close system to white goods. As a result, the will be much simpler identification of the most efficient systems for both consumers and installers. Thus we can look forward to lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions overall." He continued, "Usually, consumers would simply rely on their installers or plumbers to derive the efficiency of their systems on their behalf. But now energy labelling will be mandatory for these manufacturers, consumers will be given clear indications already. The installers can always come back to Baxi for help, assistance and training in future months. Plumbers in London and installers across the country must be ready for these changes before they are enforced in the coming year."

More positive indicators

A recent market research poll carried out among members of the Building & Engineering Services Association showed that market conditions improved in the second half of 2013. More firms reported an increase in orders compared with the six months before, while half reported a rise in their turnover levels. There was more member optimism regarding future prospects, while the number of firms recruiting new apprentices and trainees rose significantly, during the period. There were also indications that the recovering commercial environment meant that profit margins had levelled off rather than declining, although increases in labour and materials costs were becoming a cause for concern.

Cutting out the cowboys

New research has revealed that Brits have spent a whopping 2.6 billion in the last year fixing plumbing disasters, according to the survey of 2,000 consumers, a shocking two thirds stated they choose their plumber by price and not by standards, without checking if they were a registered plumber or have any professional credentials. This resulted in nearly a quarter saying they had fallen victim to a rogue plumber, with the average repair job coming in at 426, meaning Britain has shelled out an astonishing 2.6 billion rectifying plumbing jobs. When it comes to finding a plumber, more than two thirds said they would trust the opinion of a friend or family member rather than going on to check out if the person was legitimate or not.

Combi Boilers

Combi boilers are the UK's most popular type of boiler for gas central heating and domestic hot water as they produce both instantly, they are simple to use and economical to run. A combi boiler is efficient as it only heats water when a hot tap or shower is turned on, ensuring costs are kept low. A major benefit is that you need not find space for a water storage cylinder or have a tank in the loft as the water is delivered to your taps at mains pressure, so you can enjoy a powerful shower without the need for a storage cylinder or pressure pump.

Reducing CO Deaths

CO has claimed the lives of more than 100 people in Britain over the past ten years, but a recent report suggests that two thirds of homes do not have a CO Alarm installed, Gas Safe Register estimates that although there is awareness appliances need to be safety checked annually, one in three Britons do not have it done..Northern Ireland last year made the fitting of CO alarms mandatory wherever a new or replacement combustion appliance is installed in a home, regardless of the appliance's fuel type, this practice needs adopting throughout the UK.
